Table Tennis is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth using Table Tennis bats. The game usually takes place on a hard table which has been divided in two by a net. With the exception of the initial serve, players must allow a ball played towards them to bounce once on their side of the table. The player then returns the ball so that it bounces on the opposite side of the table. Points are scored when a player does not return the ball within these rules. The game can be played at a fast pace and demends quick reactions at the highest level. A skilled player can use various varieties of spin to the ball, altering it's trajectory and try to limit an opponent's options to gain an advantage.
Table Tennis as a sport is controlled by the worldwide organization; International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) which was founded in 1926. The ITTF currently has over 210 member country associations. A full list of the Official Table Tennis rules can be found in the ITTF's handbook. Since 1988 Table Tennis has been recognized as an Olympic Sport with several event categories. From 1988 to 2004 these included; men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles. However since 2008 the doubles events have been replaced by a Team event format.
