Netball is a ball sport, as the name suggests, played between two teams of seven players. The game has numerous similar characteristics with basketball, having been derived from women's basketball itself. In the 1890's Netball derived into a sport in it's own right in England before spreading througout the world.
A game of netball is played on a rectangular court which is split into three sections, with a raised goal at either end of the court. The aim of the game is to score goals, by passing and shooting the ball into your opponents goal. Each player is assigned a position within their team which dictates their position on the court, restricts their movement within the court and gives them a role within team. During general play, a player with the ball cannot take more than one step before passing it or shooting for goal. They must also pass or shoot within three seconds of receiving the ball too. Goals can only be scored by players assigned as shooters for their team.
The sport is managed globally by the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA), and is estimated to be played by over 20 million people in more than 70 countries. General level of play is widespread throughout the world, however only a few countries international and domestic leagues exist.
